a little about me

Attorney and Counselor at Law

Matthew A. Setterquist

I am a Mid-west transplant. I was born in Rockford, Il. and grew up in Frankenmuth, MI. In July 1992, when I was 15 years-old, my family picked up and moved to Hollister, CA, where I completed high school. After high school I began a career as a CAD drafter. Much of my professional experience has been in Civil Engineering and Land Surveying. However, my interest has always been the law.

In 2010, I attended the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium located in Seaside, CA. This police academy was 22 weeks long, consisting of 880-hours of training.

After completing the police academy, I decided to continue my education in law and enrolled in the Administration of Justice program at Monterey Peninsula College. I received an Associates of Science with High Honors from Monterey Peninsula College.

In 2014, the Monterey College of Law accepted my application to study law. While in law school, I immersed himself in legal studies and also served two terms as Student Bar Association President. I was also a certified law school student and worked at the Mandell Gisnet Center for Conflict Management as the NEIGHBOR Project Case Manager and court mediator in the Unlawful Detainer Court and the Small Claims Court. I graduated from the Monterey College of Law in January 2018.

After law school, I worked as a Paralegal at the Law Offices of Theodore H. Cominos, where I primarily researched legal questions, drafted complaints, answers, motions & pleadings. I also drafted estate plans with all of the associated documents. I also drafted business and real estate contracts, deeds and legal descriptions, lease terminations, and settlement agreements.

I am the proud husband to my wife, Jamie, the proud father to seven children (three boys, four girls), and a new grandpa to a grandson. We enjoy hiking in the area state parks and playing at local playgrounds.

In January 2022, the California State Bar approved my application to practice law. After years of consideration and working for other people, I decided to hang my shingle and open my own law firm. The main reason for making this decision was that I want to be directly connected to the people for whom I provide service. I want to know my clients. Clients are not a bar code or the contents of a file folder. For me, clients are people with hopes and dreams for the future and worries and concerns about the present. Let me help you plan for your future and your family’s well-being after you pass. Let me assist you carry out your loved one’s last wishes. Allow me to understand your civil disagreement or dispute and help you decide whether a lawsuit or another path, like alternative dispute resolution would be a more reasonable action. I want to be your attorney and counselor at law.
